Colombian PRESIDENT Gustavo Petro, Wednesday (1/5), said his country was cutting diplomatic relations with Israel following calling the leader of the ‘Zionist State’ a genocidal behavior over the war in the Gaza Strip.
“Starting tomorrow, we are cutting ties with Israel because they have a genocidal president,” stressed Petro, who has been a harsh critic of Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip, referring to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Petro has issued various criticisms since Israel launched an attack on the Gaza Strip as a response to Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7.
In October, days following Israel began its invasion of the Gaza Strip, Israel stopped exports to Colombia following Petro accused Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s statements regarding Gaza Strip residents of being the same as the language used by the Nazis regarding Jews.
Israel accused Petro of defending Hamas’ actions and inciting anti-Semitic enthusiasm.
Bogota retaliated by expelling the Israeli ambassador from the South American country.
Petro, Colombia’s first left-wing president, said a democratic country must not allow the Nazis to rise in international politics.
In February, he stopped purchasing weapons from Israel following dozens of people died fighting for food in the Gaza Strip. (AFP/Z-1)
