Klaipėda municipality for 5.5 million EUR planned to install almost a thousand parking spaces

As the municipality announced on Thursday, following the implementation of four projects, 957 parking spaces will be installed in the Kaunas street microdistrict.

First of all, following the reconstruction of seven apartment yards, 254 parking spaces will be installed, in later stages it is planned to install parking spaces at other apartment buildings on Kaunas Street and the adjacent Taikas Avenue. These works will cost almost 5.5 million. euros.

The Klaipėda County Chief Police Commissariat operates on Kaunas Street, which also faces a shortage of parking spaces.

According to the municipality, last December, the first project out of the aforementioned four started for the installation of new parking spaces in the Kaunas street micro-district at certain apartment buildings. After its implementation, 223 parking spaces will be created, including seven for people with disabilities. At the same time, rainwater networks, lighting, and pedestrian paths are installed.

Works worth 1.2 million euros, expected to be completed by the end of this year.

This week, the second implementation of the project for the installation of parking lots on Kaunas Street at other apartment buildings on Kaunas Street begins. There will be 254 spaces, of which 11 spaces will be reserved for cars of people with disabilities.

As announced, during the reconstruction of parking lots, it is also planned to install rainwater networks, lighting, replace high-voltage electric cables, renew asphalt surfaces, sidewalks near the staircases, and install pedestrian and bicycle paths.

Almost 1.3 million construction works worth EUR are expected to be carried out this year.

“The war for parking spaces in yards must end. Although it costs a lot of money and time to redesign, reconstruct yards or grounds, this process is continuous. New solutions are also being planned in those microdistricts of the city where parking spaces are particularly lacking,” says Klaipėda Mayor Arvydas Vaitkus.

According to him, there are cases where the problem can be solved simply, for example, new parking spaces were created at the branch of the Jūrininkai health care center on Pievu tako street with minimal resources, using an irrationally planned sidewalk. Such flexible methods will be sought in the future.

This year’s plans include renovation/installation of 288 parking spaces and other apartment buildings on Kaunos street, works on the adjacent Taikos avenue. 192 parking spaces are planned here.

The large-scale car parking development projects started in J. Janonis, Malūnininkų, Smilties Pylimo, Sportininkų, Žardininkų streets are also continuing. Upon completion of these works, more than 266 parking spaces will be created.

In the three-year strategic activity plan of Klaipėda city municipality, it is planned to allocate almost 9 million. euros for the installation of parking spaces.
