Defense agreement between China and Maldives concluded

Maldives has signed a military assistance agreement with China following ordering Indian troops to leave the country.

According to the World News Agency, regarding 89 soldiers in the Maldives will leave by May 10.

The President of Maldives, Muhammad Muizhu, said that the Indian army is coming in plain clothes instead of uniform, following May 10, there should be no Indian soldiers in Maldives, neither in military uniform nor in plain clothes, Indian army in any kind of clothes. It will not happen within this country. And I say this with full confidence.

The Maldives signed an agreement with Beijing on Monday to provide military assistance to China, the Maldives Defense Ministry said. He said that this agreement was concluded without any compensation.

The Ministry of Defense further said that the agreement was to promote strong bilateral ties. India has concerns over China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean and its influence in the Maldives.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mouning told reporters that Beijing is doing its best to jointly establish a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership with the Maldives.

Last week, India established a military base on the Lakshadweep Islands near the Maldives that will enhance New Delhi’s operational surveillance.

In January, President Maizu signed infrastructure, energy, maritime and agricultural agreements during a visit to Beijing.

Last year, President Muhammad Moeizu had raised the slogan ‘India Out’ in his election campaign.
