In the early local council elections in Vösendorf (Mödling district), the ÖVP around Mayor Hannes Koza won the absolute number of mandates on Sunday. Compared to the 2020 ballot, there was an increase of 10.73 percentage points for the local leader’s list to 48.91 percent. The People’s Party has 17 of 33 MPs. The FPÖ recorded an increase, while there were losses for the SPÖ and the Greens. The citizens’ list V2000 achieved third place and entry into the local council.

In 2020, the SPÖ was in first place with 38.43 percent, just ahead of the ÖVP. This time, according to the preliminary final result, the Social Democrats got 30.19 percent and ten mandates (minus two). The FPÖ achieved a result of 7.33 percent (plus 2.19 percentage points), which doubled the number of its seats in parliament from one to two. The Greens achieved 5.17 percent (2020: 9.75 percent). You now hold one mandate (minus two). The V2000 list, which did not take part four years ago, came third with 8.40 percent and will have three MPs in the future. Voter turnout was 64.63 percent, compared to 54.26 percent in January 2020.

In his first reaction, Matthias Zauner, regional manager of the ÖVP Lower Austria, said that the population had “clearly expressed their trust” in Koza and the People’s Party. “Now it’s a matter of the local council starting its work quickly. The challenges ahead are great, as the work on the inspection report from the local authority supervisory authority needs to be tackled immediately.”

The starting point for the early vote in the municipality in the Mödling district was an investigation once morest ÖVP Mayor Koza. The investigation into breach of trust, sedition and abuse of office was discontinued in March. There was a diversion regarding the accusation of forgery of documents. The local boss is said to have been reimbursed by the municipality for costs incurred following a tweet in the course of a legal dispute and to have “corrected” a lawyer’s invoice himself. The amount of 1,129.32 euros is said to have been shown as consulting costs for the purchase of a new fire engine. Koza transferred the sum back.

As a result, Koza called an early local council election. His party colleagues resigned their mandates, but the move was criticized by the opposition.

The community in the Mödling district was also scrutinized by the state supervisory authority. Some harsh criticism came from the SPÖ, FPÖ and the NEOS. Koza himself, however, saw himself confirmed despite criticism.
