Throughout history, poetry has become a vehicle that connects emotions and thoughts. In Guatemala, numerous poets pay tribute to mothers through their verses; from grandmothers to the youngest mothers in the family environment.
On this occasion, we publish some short poems written by Guatemalan authors to share this upcoming Mother’s Day or on any other occasion.
1. Syria
In my soul I have the name of my beloved tattooed
Because there are many reasons to give up
Here he is still smiling
For you
for my grandmother
Because they both taught me that… giving up is not part of our descent.
(Merary Chai)
2. Mother’s light
It is the shine of my eyes, your mother’s light,
the beauty of your inheritance in my soul.
The sweetest taste of the word gratitude
It is having you next to me, like a generous grove.
I close my eyes, sheltered in your skin
and I feel great in the cradle of your love.
(Vitalino Fidel Flores Pérez)
3. I sing to mom
Today the heavens sing gratitude
knowing that within you the sun was born with my name.
today the days work a symphony
with winds of harmony and they sing
this is the poem for you.
Mother!
(María Mercedes Navarro)
4. I’m going to kiss you mother (fragment)
I’m going to kiss you mother
Just as embryos kiss from the depths of their being
I’m going to kiss you mother
From your chest, from the depths of your heart
I am going to kiss you so that no one but me can kiss you with the unique kiss of my soul
From your insides I kiss you mother
Because I am sure that when I kiss you when I grow up, you will know how to know that kiss even though your eyes can no longer look at me…
(Adonis De León)
5. Madre
Mother, I am grateful for what you inspire.
I tell the wind that you brighten my days.
Your advice like water calms me and guides me.
You teach me to fight for my dreams, looking up.
You shelter me with your wisdom, on your side, how beautiful life is.
(Marisol Bocaletti)
6. Elegy to the mother of a friend (fragment)
Your mother promised to wait for us
there in the heart of heaven
so that from time to time
let’s open the doors of the rain
and let’s enjoy together
the fruits of the field,
the prizes of love,
victory at last.
(Edgar Saúl Godoy)
7. Owner of all the gardens (Fragment)
I thank the one who gave me life, in that teamwork in which his care and affection have always been.
That ear available 24/7, attentive to your response. How did it go? following arriving from school, college, university and work and that continues to be that door to conversation to this day.
That transformative and visionary look seeing myself not only for who I am today, but for who I can become and always in the mirror of their eyes the best version of me.
A hug that heals everything, banishing the nightmares of a child and the fears of an adult.
The best flavor and seasoning lives in the magic that happens in your kitchen, with that aroma that has the seal and vitamin of love.
She doesn’t deserve a flower,
she has won all the gardens.
And I will always be your little one every time I call you mom.
(Gerson González)
8. Dear mother
If I might look at you,
like it was the first time
and save your image
like a love pact
of my genuine love
in the form of plains and caresses,
I promise you, I swear,
I wouldn’t forget for a second
the tone of your voice
calling you “my life.”
And if only I had,
once more,
the opportunity to choose you
and look at you,
have it for insurance
that I would remember how to love you
and adore you,
only for the longing, the honor
and the pleasure of calling you
“Madre”.
(Andrea Ignacio)
9. Sunflowers for mom
Sunsets wrapped in tenderness, permanent gazes that encourage you to navigate coherent paths full of kindness.
If you knew how many times I think regarding you and the advice you have given me. You are part of my essence, a lighthouse in my adversity.
Quiet, subtle to the touch…
You never refuse to help, even if you don’t have the time and sometimes the will.
Your goodness is perhaps one of the most sublime gifts that God might give you.
Mommy; You are the being that I admire and love the most on this earth. Your courage, perseverance and justice are the clairvoyance of my heart.
Your words are sacred and for many people, you are an oasis full of love.
Stubborn, you always achieve what you set out to do despite the obstacles.
I hope these words are petals that shelter your existence. You are the sunflower of my hope, my infinite desire to be a brave woman, aware that in this life the most important thing is to be genuine and honorable.
(Ivette Money)
10. A dad
And I became a father…
no one demanded it from me,
Love told me!
It scared me to be who I didn’t come to be:
a potato….
I am a dad in the
times of laughter, of tears, in the
abundance and in scarcity,
In health and disease.
THANK MY LORD:
I’M A POTATO!
(Ruth López Orizabal)
