As Lithuania prepares to host the German brigade, 19 developers presented their proposals at the “Industry Day” event organized by the Ministry of National Defense (KAM) and the Lithuanian Real Estate Development Association (LNTPA).
The proposals include both planned and already developed residential projects.
“Today, we presented the German representatives with various accommodation options suitable for both soldiers and their families. The next step is to receive comments from the German side on what type of projects would best meet the expectations of the visitors,” Remigijus Mika, Director of the Logistics Department, was quoted in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ report.
According to him, although currently the ministry has not yet received confirmed needs and requirements from the Germans regarding the accommodation model, one of the options to meet the need for residential housing might be long-term housing rental.
Infrastructure for thousands of Germans in Lithuania is being sought in preparation for the country to receive the German brigade, its soldiers should go to Lithuania with their families due to the long rotation period.
Minister of National Defense Arvydas Anušauskas told BNS that Germany has specified the number of soldiers who would come to Lithuania with their families, but refused to disclose the data.
The KAM did not name the companies that participated in the presentation event, but the state-owned Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (LTG) themselves announced that they presented the idea of building a residential quarter for German soldiers and their families on a 40-hectare area in Vilnius Naujamiesti.
“The area next to the railway meets the expectations of a number of brigade families – connection by railway and public transport, the central part of the city, the possibility of establishing a new quarter with high-quality public spaces and the necessary services”, said Ieva Lauraitytė, the administrative director of the group, in a statement of LTG on Thursday.
According to LTG, the area between Tūkstantmetis, Iešmininkai, Prūsa, Darius and Girėnas and Panerėi streets is currently being prepared for conversion, and if there is a need to settle the families of soldiers of the German brigade here, developers would be sought for this project.
It is planned that buildings of various purposes might be built in the area of New Town, which is no longer needed for railways, and the territory itself would become a multifunctional space with residential and commercial buildings, kindergartens, public spaces and other infrastructure.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, long-term rental options are being sought for housing in Vilnius or Kaunas for the accommodation of soldiers arriving with their families. One of the most important requirements is quick access to the places of future service, and the availability of educational institutions for families of soldiers.
According to the report, opportunities are being sought in the country’s largest cities to house soldiers arriving without their families.
The infrastructure for the German brigade will also be developed in Rūdninkai, Šalčininkai district.
Here it will be developed most intensively – not only barracks, but also headquarters, canteen, equipment repair and garage infrastructure, internal roads will have to be built. It is planned to develop these objects in Rūdninkai and in Jonava district, Rukla together with business – with the help of private-public partnership (PPP).
The German brigade will arrive in Lithuania in stages – already this year Lithuania will receive the first soldiers, and by 2027 it is planned to receive the entire German brigade.
In total, regarding 5 thousand will move to Lithuania. German brigade soldiers and civilians, some of them will come with their families. There will be two places of service – Rūdninkai and Rukla, the soldiers and their families will live in Vilnius and Kaunas, and additionally logistic points will be created in other parts of Lithuania.
