The interview with the PD MEP and candidate for the European elections at the Centre
«It is enough to advertise Vannacci and other candidates included in the lists just to attract attention. A campaign that is based on the free words of certain characters is truly squalid. The intelligence of voters who want to talk regarding concrete issues, such as the common debt, the effects of digital and green transformation, unemployment, common defense and social protection for the most vulnerable is underestimated.” This is according to Beatrice Covassi, MEP of the Democratic Party and candidate in the Center constituency.
War at the center of the debate. Tarquinio and Strada say no more weapons. Do you agree with them?
«The next legislature will have to bring peace to Ukraine and this will require a huge diplomatic effort. But in the meantime we cannot abandon a people to their fate. Georgia, like all countries that risk falling under Putin’s sights, look at us with hope.”
Some accuse you of having moved your center of gravity too far to the left. So you don’t risk alienating the moderates?
«Woe if those who were instrumental in the birth of the Democratic Party, a synthesis of different political cultures, were lost along the way. Catholics have played an important role in affirming values such as the centrality of the person, Europeanism and the fight once morest inequalities. To relaunch the Democratic Party we need to have a clear political vision based on the values of socialist and Christian humanism. Without this renewed ability to synthesize, the Democratic Party would not exist.”
Do you share an understanding with the M5S, which in Europe does not want to ally itself with the socialists?
«There are no doubts regarding our positioning: we are with the socialists and democrats. The M5S is ambiguous and indecisive, in Europe as in Italy.”
Anti-fascism continues to be discussed. Is this the way to gain consensus?
«It seems lunar to me that in 2024 we will return to controversy on the topic. The Constitution was born from anti-fascism, a fact acquired in the DNA of our republican and democratic culture. It would be important for those in government to be less ambiguous. Anti-fascism has nothing to do with the vulgarity uttered at the May Day concert, for which I express solidarity with the prime minister.”
What are your thoughts on the Schlein-Meloni TV duel?
«I am a pragmatic woman and I think that citizens should be able to distinguish the visions of which the two leaders are bearers. If the right wins, every country, starting with Italy, will be more alone: goodbye, for example, to the common debt.”
