Large-scale protests once morest Israeli actions in Gaza continue on American university campuses. Protesters are demanding that universities stop accepting donations from defense and other companies that do business with Israel.

The protest movement came into the spotlight following police were called to the Columbia University campus and detained more than 100 demonstrators.

Since then, demonstrations and sit-ins have expanded, with student protests taking place at New York University, Yale University, Columbia University, Harvard University, UC Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Emerson College and Tufts University, the University of Texas at Austin, and other universities throughout the country.

Jewish students complain that criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza often turns into anti-Semitism, and that they themselves feel unsafe. A rabbi at Columbia University previously advised Jewish students to temporarily avoid campus.

Student activists deny accusations of anti-Semitism and say they only criticize the Israeli state and its supporters.

Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union condemned the arrest of protesters and called on authorities to respect their rights to free speech.

But some congressional Republicans have accused university administrators of allowing Jewish students to be harassed.

In the past few days, there have also been counter-protests on several campuses by those who support Israel.

Wrapped in Israeli and American flags, protesters marched through the streets surrounding the Columbia University campus, waving flags.

US President Joe Biden said here that he condemns both “anti-Semitic protests” and “those who do not understand what is happening to the Palestinians.”

Pro-Israel march.
