Local elections in England put Sunak under pressure

It was the last test of sentiment before the British general election, which is most likely to take place in the autumn. Polls previously predicted a defeat for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party (Torys).

Elections took place in 107 of the 317 English communities (“councils”). The mayoral election in London and ten metropolitan regions is particularly important. In London, Mayor Sadiq Khan of the Labor Party has a good chance of winning a third term. The Labor candidates are also considered favorites in the Manchester and Liverpool regions.

Most municipalities want to announce their results later today, with the result of the London mayoral election expected on Saturday.

Depending on the extent of the defeat, the pressure on Tory party leader Sunak increases. He ran in October 2022 to stop the Tories’ downward spiral. So far he hasn’t succeeded.
