iOS 18: Apple may launch generative AI to summarize messages, search in Safari and more

Update (05/04/2024) – FM

It’s no longer a secret that 2024 will mark the launch of various artificial intelligence tools from Apple, as the company itself confirmed its interest in technologies such as ChatGPT. It’s possible that its first generative AI functions will arrive on board iOS 18, which will be announced during the 2024 WWDC conference.

On Friday (04), the AppleInsider released information that it claims to have verified with people supposedly familiar with the development of “Ajax” — the codename for Apple’s AI model. Specifically, the leak addresses the possible debut of a function that would generate text message summaries received on cell phone using artificial intelligence.

According to sources, Ajax will observe information such as the sender’s name, possible references made to other contacts saved on the cell phone, locations and other details. With this information, artificial intelligence would produce a summary of what was said in a long text message, highlighting the main points.

It is mentioned that Apple is conducting extensive testing with the AI, specifically evaluating its performance when being processed directly on the iPhone hardware — that is, without relying on cloud computing. This might be a way to avoid loopholes for data leakage and users’ privacy conversations.

Several of Apple’s generative artificial intelligence features are expected to work without needing an Internet connection. However, while Ajax can generate short text-based responses on the device, more advanced responses or text summaries may still require cloud processing.

This information is in line with previous leaks suggesting that Apple is in talks with OpenAI and Google to license their cloud-based technologies for AI. However, the project remains under absolute secrecy.

WWDC 2024 will take place from June 10th. In addition to iOS 18, the brand’s artificial intelligence features are also expected to land in iPadOS 18 and macOS 15. Updates for all of Apple’s operating systems are expected to be revealed at the conference.

iOS 18: Apple expected to bring generative AI features to Safari, Photos, Notes and more apps

A Apple will be the next manufacturer to introduce generative artificial intelligence features into its cell phones, tablets and computers. In addition to supposedly working on technology-based features for Photos, Notes, and other iOS and macOS appsnew rumors indicate that big tech is Preparing a major update for the AI-powered Safari browser.

As reported by AppleInsider This Tuesday (30), Safari will receive some of the most significant changes with the launch of Apple’s next operating systems. In addition to a new design, the browser should now have artificial intelligence functions similar to those of Microsoft Edge, such as page summarization.

According to people familiar with the latest test builds of Safari 18, which will arrive on board iOS 18, one of the new artificial intelligence features prepared for the browser is Intelligent Search (“Intelligent Search”, in free translation).

When enabled, this tool would utilize native AI processing — specifically for the “Ajax” generative AI model, which is also expected to be integrated with Siri — to identify key topics and phrases on a web page, and thereby, allow the generation of a summary of the content.

It is worth remembering that, recently, a famous code analyst found evidence that Apple is developing a “navigation assistant” for Safari. It is possible to deduce that this mysterious feature is what is now called “Intelligent Search”.

Another feature that might come to Apple’s browser is the “Web Eraser” which, according to sources, will allow users to remove or erase specific parts of a web page by manipulating its HTML. With this, it will be possible to remove texts, images, banners or entire sections of a page with ease.

Interestingly, adjustments made with this tool will be persistent. This means that, following deleting specific parts of a given website and closing it, the adjustments will be memorized and automatically reproduced when accessing the same page once more.

Speaking of the supposed redesigned design of Safari 18, leakers suggest that Apple will try to facilitate access to the most used tools by bringing them together in a single menu in the Address Bar. These tools, which were previously divided into different menus, can be found more quickly in an intuitive section.

It’s possible this is a way to assimilate the macOS and iPadOS experience, although similar changes are also expected for Safari on iOS.

Apple would also be preparing new features for image search on iOS. Visual Search, for example, might become more comprehensive and work in any application. Therefore, instead of being limited to image results found in the Photos app, the tool might be used directly through the Safari selection menu.

It is reported that these updates to image search are in an early development phase, so there is a possibility that they might be delayed until 2025. The remaining features appear to be in full swing in the testing phase with Apple’s team of software engineers — so it shouldn’t be long before they are revealed.

Apple is expected to introduce generative AI features as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15, which are expected to be announced during the WWDC 2024 conference on June 10.

The iOS physical activity app is another that will be updated, but Gurman does not mention what improvements Apple may implement.

In any case, the analyst believes that the main highlight of the new system will be the even more intelligent Siri, which can suggest content, answer complex questions and edit texts while writing a message.

Furthermore, the system’s home screen can be even more customizable, allowing the user to place application icons wherever they wish. Another important change is Safari’s navigation assistant, but nothing has been revealed regarding it yet.

For now, as Apple is only expected to reveal the news at WWDC in June, everything needs to be considered as just another rumor.
