Italy – King Abdullah II of Jordan discussed in Italy, yesterday, Thursday, the situation in the Gaza Strip, warning of an Israeli operation in the city of Rafah, south of the Strip.

This came during two separate meetings he held in Rome with President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, on a foreign tour he was conducting to Italy and the United States, according to two statements from the Royal Court, two copies of which Anadolu received.

The first statement stated that the Jordanian King and Mattarella discussed “developments in the region, especially the deteriorating conditions witnessed in Gaza.”

The King stressed “the necessity of reaching an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, stopping the humanitarian catastrophe in the Strip, and providing relief aid in all possible ways and without any obstacles.”

He warned of the repercussions of the Israeli attack on the city of Rafah, which is crowded with displaced Palestinians in the south of the Gaza Strip, according to the same statement.

He reiterated that “there is no peace or stability in the region without a just solution to the Palestinian issue, based on the two-state solution (Palestinian and Israeli).”

The statement indicated that the Italian President stressed the “compatibility” of his country’s position with Jordan, especially with regard to the efforts made to cease fire in Gaza, and to reach a political horizon to achieve peace on the basis of the two-state solution.

He praised Amman’s efforts to deliver aid to Gaza and alleviate the suffering of its people, stressing “the importance of the Jordanian role at this critical time in the region,” according to the same source.

The Italian President warned of “the repercussions of the attack on Rafah and the expansion of the regional conflict.”

The Jordanian King also held a meeting with Prime Minister Meloni, during which he warned of the “serious” consequences of the attack on Rafah, warning of “the seriousness of the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza,” according to a statement from the Royal Court.

He stressed “the need to intensify efforts to reduce the escalation in the region, to avoid expanding the circle of conflict, which threatens international peace and security.”

He stressed the need for the international community to move “urgently” to reach an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, protect civilians, and maintain the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Strip without objection or delay.

He called for the importance of continuing to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), as it is “a lifeline for regarding 2 million Palestinians in Gaza, as well as providing basic services to millions of Palestinian refugees in its places of work.”

On January 26, 2024, 18 countries and the European Union suspended their funding for UNRWA based on Israeli allegations, but last March some of these parties and countries began reviewing their decisions regarding the agency and released funding for it.
