The Investigative Police (PDI) reported this Friday that it removed 82.8 kilos of ketamine from circulation, in the largest seizure of this drug of which there are records in Chile.
“A quantity of almost 250 thousand doses was withdrawn from the market, which in commercial value we are talking regarding almost 1,200 million pesos,” reported the national director of the PDI, Eduardo Cerna, emphasizing that “the most serious thing regarding this is the damage to the health of our young people, because it is a drug that is in the core consumption of a fairly young range.”
Ketamine is used as a component of the popular drug “tusi”, also known as “pink cocaine”.
According to Radio Cooperativa, the doses, found in powder form – and not liquid as it usually is – inside two vehicles that were intercepted, came from Peru and were going to be distributed to different criminal gangs in the southern area of Santiago and other regions of the country, the authorities indicated.
The substance was stored by a transnational criminal organization in cars conditioned for that purpose, according to the investigation by the Metropolitan Anti-Narcotics Brigade and the Prosecutor’s Office.
During the operation, four people of Chilean nationality were arrested, three over 60 years of age: all were remanded in preventive detention.
“It is a Chilean structure, which is actually the logistics line of this criminal organization that transported ketamine,” Cerna pointed out.
“Behind this seizure, which is the largest that the country has known so far of ketamine, not only is this substance being removed from the market, but many young people are being saved from being the consumers of these doses,” revealed the Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Carolina Tohá.
Five kilos of cocaine base, cell phones, cash and vehicles were also seized in the operation.
Chile, unlike neighbors such as Bolivia or Peru, is not a drug producer, but rather a destination country and a distribution platform to Asia, Europe and the United States thanks to its numerous ports.
