US diplomacy today condemned the recent campaign of cyber attacks in Europe and attributed it to Russia, as the governments of Germany and the Czech Republic have already done.
The United States is condemning malicious cyber activity by the Russian intelligence agency (GRU) once morest Germany, the Czech Republic and other European countries, the State Department said.
“The United States strongly condemns the malicious cyber attacks” carried out by the Russian military intelligence services (GRU) ” once morest Germany, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Sweden.”
The US is committed to the security of our allies and partners and to maintaining the rules-based international order, including in cyberspace. We call on Russia to stop this malicious activity and abide by its international commitments and obligations,” spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.
The attack was carried out, Washington states, by the well-known group codenamed APT28, “a known, dangerous actor with a heavy history of malicious, harmful, destabilizing and disruptive practices.”
The State Department specifically recalls that it decided to impose sanctions on certain “factors” due to the group’s activities during the 2016 US presidential election or actions aimed at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Regarding cyberattacks in Europe, US authorities worked with Germany to block the routers used by the perpetrators of the attacks, the statement added.
The governments of Germany and the Czech Republic today blamed this group of Russian hackers controlled by Moscow for a recent campaign of cyberattacks in their countries, “malign behavior” to which the EU promised a strong response.
