Some 9,088 Palestinians are being held in Israeli jails, an Israeli human rights group said Wednesday.

The detainees include 3,424 prisoners without trial or charge under the controversial administrative detention policy and 865 Palestinians classified as illegal combatants, the Center for the Defense of the Individual (HaMoked) said in a report, citing figures released by the Israeli Prison Service.

“Illegal combatant,” an unflattering category under international law, is defined in Israeli law as “someone who has directly or indirectly participated in hostile acts once morest Israel.”

The detainees were placed behind bars in Israel following the Hamas attack last October.

HaMoked said this figure does not include Palestinians detained by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.

“Israel’s treatment of security prisoners violates their rights to equality, dignity, family life, education and other rights, which is contrary to international law,” the rights group said. human rights.

At least 34,568 Palestinians have been killed and at least 77,765 injured in Israel’s brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip since the Hamas attack on October 7.

Israel has imposed a strict state of siege on the Gaza Strip, leaving the specter of famine hanging over the population, and more particularly over the inhabitants of northern Gaza.
