The first consequence, almost immediate, is that the leader of Action, Carlo Calenda, also decides to run in all the constituencies together with Elena Bonetti. “The Prime Minister’s entry into the field and her anti-European and sovereignist platform completely change the scenario”, says Calenda himself, who explains: “We must oppose with all means the project of ‘a small Italy in a small Europe’ by Giorgia Meloni. It is necessary to respond to this anti-European challenge by getting directly involved. After consulting the party’s board of directors, Elena Bonetti and I have decided to accept the challenge and run together in all the constituencies”.

However, the former mayoral candidate in Rome had announced that he would not run for the European elections, explaining that the Action lists would only include people who would then actually go to Brussels, working as MEPs. “Should I run? Not me – he told Tagadà, on La7, in January – because I think those who go to Europe should run. If someone who already knows not to go to Europe runs, it’s a debasement, a mockery of the voters. And why do I have to make fun of the voters?”.
