Wishing to take advantage of the dynamic offered by last year’s organization of the Pan American Games, Chile might soon submit a bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
En South America, Chile might be tempted to take up the torch of the Olympic and Paralympic Games following Brazil, host of the event in 2016 with Rio de Janeiro.
If for the moment no official announcement has been made, the President of the Republic has in any case initiated a preparatory process for the establishment of a possible Chilean candidacy for the 2036 edition.
At the beginning of April 2024, the Head of State announced that he had mandated the Minister of Sports, Jaime Pizarro, to study the conditions to be met with a view to carrying out such an unprecedented undertaking. by its scale in the country of more than 19.2 million inhabitants.
As Gabriel Boric explained, interviewed by « Canal 13 » on the sidelines of the celebrations surrounding the National Sports Day which was held on April 6:
I have asked the Minister to gather all the information necessary to see what it means to apply for 2036 so that we can host the Games if necessary.
It is a task that falls to many governments, with support from the public and private sectors, but we must dream high, we can dream high.
With this initiative, the President of the Republic obviously intends to position Chile among the possible hosts of future major international sporting events.
The declaration of intent initiating a preparatory process comes a few months following the successful organization of the last edition of the Pan American Games in Santiago, the capital. The event – orchestrated from October 20 to November 5, 2023 – constitutes in fact a springboard for reflection and, if necessary, for the implementation of a candidacy and a project which will then need to be discussed and presented to the Future Host Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Visiting the site of the Pan American Games Village last October, designed to leave a legacy of housing for the local population, the President of the Olympic institution had encouraged the development of a possible candidacy from Chile.
As Thomas Bach declared:
My advice would be that once you successfully complete these Games, you need to start thinking regarding the next goal.
And among them might be the Olympic Games or other events of this nature.
This statement was followed by a statement from the General Director of Santiago 2023 and former President of the Chilean Football Federation, Harold Mayne-Nicholls.
The latter notably stated:
I think if we continue like this, we might host the Olympic Games. People are already enthusiastic, the infrastructure is ready and we need to maintain it.
The Pan-Americans are a success and it proves that in Chile we are ready for bigger events.
If by chance Chile were to position itself concretely in the race for the 2036 Summer Games, the country – which has never applied for the Games – would in a certain way follow the strategy adopted by Brazil which, following hosting the Pan American Games in 2007, it launched a bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
Although behind in terms of rating during the application phase, the said application was in fine crowned with success, with the Rio 2016 election, on October 2, 2009.
Defended by the President of Brazil, Lula, the city From Rio then won in the third round of voting once morest Madrid (Spain), by 66 votes to 32 for the Spanish capital. During the first two rounds, Chicago (Illinois, United States) was eliminated from the start of the race (18 votes, compared to 22 for Tokyo, 26 for Rio de Janeiro, and 28 for Madrid), before Tokyo (Japan) was also excluded from the vote (20 votes, once morest 29 for Madrid and 46 for Rio de Janeiro).
