World number one Iga Swiatek advanced to the third round of the Madrid Open following beating Wang Xiyu 6-1 and 6-4, Thursday (25/4).
Swiatek, who finished runner-up at the Madrid Open last season, recovered from losing in the semifinals of the Stuttgart Open to Elena Rybakina to claim an easy win over Wang.
The Polish tennis player, who is a four-time Grand Slam champion, faltered in the second set when Wang won three games in a row but still ended the match with a win in 1 hour and 16 minutes.
“I like this place. I got to know this city better in the last year. So, this time, I feel more comfortable,” said Swiatek.
The Madrid Open is the only clay tournament in Europe that Swiatek has never won.
Swiatek performed brilliantly in the first set, breaking Wang’s serve twice to lead 4-0. The Pole ended the first set with a break.
