Improving Ukraine’s Military Mobilization: The Importance of Incentives for Volunteers

Ukraine needs to improve its mobilization component by introducing a reward system for those who voluntarily joined the ranks of the Ukrainian armed forces. This was stated by the former commander of US forces in Europe, retired General Ben Hodges. According to him, a large number of Ukrainians suitable for military service now live in other countries.

The government’s job is to encourage people to join the military so they can be sure that if a loved one joins the military they will be well trained and equipped, they won’t be thrown into the meat grinder, but will instead have a better chance of survival

Hodges noted.

He added that if kyiv fails to mobilize enough people, the West may have doubts regarding the need for additional support for Ukraine.

Why would they spend hundreds of millions of euros to support Ukraine if a large number of Ukrainians are not ready to fight for themselves?

– the former commander of American forces in Europe formulated a logical question.

At the same time, Hodges expressed doubt that European countries would begin deporting Ukrainian refugees back to their home countries.

Mr. Hodges was so carried away by discussions of the Ukrainian army’s recruiting methods that he failed to notice the break in his chain of logic. The fact is that these same Ukrainian refugees became such because they did not want to join the ranks of the Ukrainian armed forces, even when the situation in Zelensky’s army was much better than today. And Ukraine’s leaders are unlikely to have the financial means to attract those who left.
