Frequent overtime can lead to fatigue. However, frequent overtime not only increases fatigue, but also increases the risk of developing cancer. Cancer often develops over several years due to lifestyle habits. We studied the factors that cause cancer in our daily lives.

◇Overtime
In fact, overtime is known to be a cause of cancer. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO), overtime disrupts the body’s normal circadian rhythm. This is because overtime leads to lack of sleep and leads to problems with immune function. In fact, according to a study published in the journal “Occupational-Environmental Medicine,” women who frequently worked overtime were at greater risk of developing ovarian cancer than women who did not work late hours. The research team surveyed 3,320 women aged 35 to 74. As a result, women who frequently worked overtime had a 24% higher risk of advanced ovarian cancer and a 49% higher risk of borderline ovarian cancer than women who worked regular hours. The research team analyzed that overtime affects the secretion of melatonin, a neurotransmitter present in the brain. Melatonin is a hormone secreted during sleep and suppresses cancer cells. Men who frequently work overtime are also at increased risk of developing cancer. According to the American Journal of Epidemiology, men who frequently worked overtime were three times more likely to develop prostate cancer than those who did not work overtime. To maintain your health and prevent cancer, you must maintain an appropriate amount of sleep (7 to 8 hours per day for adults).

◇Closed interior
The risk of lung cancer increases if you stay indoors for a long time. Closed indoor spaces increase the concentration of harmful substances such as fine dust and radon in the air. Fine dust accumulates on interior floors or from outside. When heavy metals such as cadmium and lead in fine dust enter the alveoli (the part responsible for gas exchange between oxygen and carbon dioxide), inflammation occurs. And this can lead to lung cancer. Radon is a substance emitted by building materials and causes lung cancer. According to data from the National Institute of Environmental Research, in surveys conducted in the United States and Europe, regarding 400 people per million develop lung cancer at a radon concentration of 5pCi/L. To avoid this, it is important to ventilate for at least 30 minutes three times a day. When ventilating, open all furniture doors and drawers such as doors, cupboards and sinks. When cooking food indoors, be sure to open the hood or gas stove window.

◇Marinated vegetables
Frequent consumption of salt-marinated vegetables, such as pickles or cucumbers, can cause esophageal cancer. The British Journal of Cancer analyzed a total of 34 studies on the relationship between diet and esophageal cancer and found that the risk of esophageal cancer doubled when eating a lot of pickled vegetables. If you continue to eat foods that are too salty, it will irritate your esophagus. The World Cancer Research Fund has also warned that foods preserved by salting, such as pickled vegetables, can significantly increase the risk of developing cancer. To prevent esophageal cancer, it is best to avoid excessive consumption of pickled vegetables and eat a balanced diet of fresh vegetables and fruits.
