A mental health specialist from the Tarakan Jakarta Regional General Hospital (RSUD), Zulvia Oktanida Syarif, recommends the practice of writing a gratitude journal, a kind of diary, regularly, as a way to get rid of feelings of unhappiness.

“Write regarding things we are grateful for, we need to be grateful for even simple things. When we do this regularly, it can help us get rid of feelings of unhappiness,” said Vivi, as Zulvia is known, quoted on Tuesday (30/4).

Vivi said that the contents of a gratitude journal are a little different from most people’s diaries, because the contents are not complaints.

It’s best not to write down complaints or compare your own happiness with standards of happiness that come from outside yourself.

“Create your own happiness because everyone has the right to be happy and happiness turns out to be all the good things we have,” said Vivi.

Apart from that, Vivi also suggests writing down simple achievements that you enjoy, for example meeting someone you like, or doing gym exercise to encourage yourself to repeat that pleasure the next day.

Vivi said that writing a gratitude journal can make people learn to accept reality and see all problems from a positive side.

In fact, people can change their perspective so that they are not too fixated on the negative side, so that in the future when the problem comes once more, they can learn from the experience.

The role of good acceptance and appreciation for oneself is something very basic.

When someone can practice, express good acceptance of themselves and the life situations they are experiencing, it will help someone become happier.

Jakarta is included in the list of 10 cities with the highest levels of stress in the world, based on The Least and Most Stressful Cities Index 2021 report.

Another global research in Health Service Monitoring 2023, which surveyed the views of 23,274 adult respondents spread across 31 countries in the period 21 July-4 August 2023, stated that mental health was the most worrying health problem, above cancer. (Ant/Z-1)
