At 185.1 million euros combined for all the clubs in the championship, thethe total payroll of French Ligue 2 teams the last 2022-2023 season increased by 28% over one year, according to accounting figures communicated by the National Directorate of Control and Management (DNCG).
The cumulative salaries of Ligue 2 just exceed those of OL alone
This total of 185 million euros narrowly exceeds the sole “staff remuneration” of Olympique Lyonnais over the same financial year (€156.7 million), the second in Ligue 1, (far) behind PSG where salaries spill over into the competition. In Ligue 2, the average is 9.2 million euros, almost exactly the equivalent of Valenciennes’ payroll. A season later, the northern club must bow down by going down to the National.
The Girondins, Raf, Pau and Laval prove that money does not always bring success
Further proof that having the biggest salaries does not guarantee sporting success, the Girondins de Bordeaux dominate the subject and yet they fail to find the elite. Although they were closer in 2023 than they are this season. Conversely, Laval, Pau and Rodez prove in this current exercise that having fewer resources does not prevent ambition. This is true episodically but over time, the implacable law of the richest who is strongest generally applies. Below are the payrolls of the 20 Ligue 2 clubs last 2022-2023 season.
