residents began to decorate the city themselves

Last year, the Riga City Council launched a pilot project in which residents’ associations wishing to organize a plot of municipal land were offered practical support – black soil, lawn seeds, compost and waste collection containers. This spring, ten associations of Riga residents applied for a project with the initiative to carry out landscaping in 11 places. Improvement work began during the Great Taloka, and with the support of the local government, residents laid out new flower beds, sowed lawns, updated decorations and collected garbage. Improvement of the territories will continue.

In total, 83.5 cubic meters of black soil and 3.3 cubic meters of compost, as well as 35.5 kilograms of lawn seeds, were supplied for work. Support for residents’ associations was organized and provided by the Center for Residents of Riga Neighborhoods in cooperation with “Rīgas meži”.

In turn, the removal of garbage collected by residents’ associations was organized during the Great Cleanup with the participation of the Department of Territorial Improvement of the Riga Municipality.

This support mechanism was tested, bearing in mind the interest of the residents themselves in improving the territory belonging to the local government in the surrounding area with their own hands. Last year, three residents’ associations asked for support.
