Ya is official. As we announced, it was imminent, and so it has been. Adrian Newey will leave red bull following nearly two decades (18 years in particular) working for the Milton Keynes-based team. It is the second bombing in 2024 following the signing of Lewis Hamilton for Ferrari. It was announced at the beginning of February, while this became known on Wednesday 1 May.
The brilliant 65-year-old designer, currently technical director of the energy drinks group, has been the main architect, along with Max Verstappen, for good cycle by the Austrians. Newey has developed a series of unbeatable machines that the three-time world champion has taken to the top time and time once more.
Your next destination will be Ferrari
The fact is that Newey will leave the team in the first quarter of 2025 (therefore he will leave following turning 19 at Red Bull). Now its fate remains to be known. It’s clear we’re talking regarding a visionary, and that makes him a hugely sought-following piece. Basically, the British guru’s desire is to stay with Ferrari. Aston Martin (and even McLaren) also intend to incorporate him, but the F1 aerodynamics guru wants to be part of the Maranello team, and that seems to tip the balance beyond a more or less astronomical salary. However, the announcement of Newey’s signing for the Scuderia does not appear to be coming anytime soon. Although it will be the most talked regarding issue during the Miami GP which takes place this weekend.
What is an irrefutable fact is that this is a blow to the current dominator of F1. Newey has been part of Red Bull since 2006, leading the design of the formidable cars that have led the team to his 13 world titles.
Goodbye message
Until he leaves the Austrian team, Newey will participate in a number of specific races this season, while also working with RB17he hypercar by Red Bull which will be presented at Goodwood next July.
Newey said goodbye in a curt way. “Since I was a child I wanted to be a fast car designer. My dream was to become an engineer in F1 and I have been lucky enough to make it come true. For almost two decades, it has been my great honor to have played a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progress from a newcomer to a team that wins multiple titles.. However, I feel that now is an appropriate time to pass the baton to others and seek new challenges for myself. In the meantime, we’re rushing through the final stages of RB17 development, so I’ll spend my time focusing on this. I would like to thank the many incredible people I have worked with at Red Bull during our journey over the past 18 years for their talent, dedication and hard work. “It has been a real privilege and I am sure that the engineering team is well prepared for the work before the final development of the car during the four-year period set by these regulations,” he stressed.
Horner pays tribute
For its part, Christian Hornerteam principal and managing director of Red Bull, has surrendered to the figure of Newey: “All our best moments in the last 20 years have come with Adrian’s hand at the technical helm. His vision and brilliance have helped us win 13 titles in 20 seasons. His exceptional ability to conceptualize beyond F1 and provide wider inspiration for grand prix car design, his remarkable talent for embracing change and finding the most rewarding areas of the rules to focus on, and his relentless will to win, have helped Red Bull Racing to become a greater force. We have even come further than the late Dietrich Mateschitz might have imagined. More than that, the last 19 years with Adrian have been a lot of fun. For me, when Adrian joined Red Bull, he was already a superstar designer. Two decades and 13 championships later, he leaves as a true legend. He is also my friend and someone to whom I will be eternally grateful for everything he has contributed to our association. “The legacy he leaves behind will reverberate through the halls of Milton Keynes and the RB17 will be a fitting testament and legacy to his time with us.”
Thus technical director Pierre watchhas all the ballots to succeed Newey as technical director.
