VerviersThe Verviers criminal court on Tuesday looked into a case of break-ins and simple thefts from cars. The defendant, well known to the courts and born in 1974, operated mainly in parking lots popular with walkers. To put an end to these disturbing and repeated thefts, the public prosecutor is calling for a three-year prison sentence.

The particularity of this case is that the defendant has already been convicted 31 times for driving but also theft, whether qualified or not.

“If we total the prison sentences that my client has already served, we arrive at 239.5 months which makes a total of more than 20 years in prison,” explained the defense lawyer.

During the hearing the defendant declared: “I never worked, I always stole. I am not in good health and three times a week I go to dialysis.”

“You annoy everyone by stealing three francs six sous”

“You test car doors and you steal from them with disconcerting good-naturedness and naturalness”, was surprised by the judge, who underlined the meager amount of the loot. “You’re bothering everyone to steal three francs six sous,” he insisted.

The defense lawyer recalls for his part that his client only benefited from preferential measures on two occasions. He therefore argues in favor of a stand-alone probation sentence.

The judgment is expected on May 17.
