Al-Safadi discusses regional developments and the Gaza war in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh – Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi discussed, on Sunday, with a number of participants in a forum hosted by Riyadh, regional developments, stopping the war and the “humanitarian catastrophe” in the Gaza Strip.

This came according to statements from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, copies of which Anadolu received, regarding the Jordanian minister’s meetings on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, which was launched in the Saudi capital today.

Al-Safadi’s meetings included his Norwegian counterpart, Espen Barth Ede, members of the ministerial committee assigned by the extraordinary joint Arab-Islamic summit regarding developments in the Gaza Strip, and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign, Political and Security Affairs, Josep Borrell.

During his meeting with Barth Eide, the Jordanian minister stressed “the importance of recognizing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

The two ministers discussed developments in the situation in Gaza, the regional repercussions, and efforts to reduce escalation in the region, ensure the protection of civilians, and deliver adequate and sustainable humanitarian aid to all parts of the Strip.

They stressed that there is no alternative to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the face of the “humanitarian catastrophe,” and the necessity of supporting and enabling it to carry out its role.

Al-Safadi and members of the aforementioned ministerial committee held a meeting chaired by Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan.

The meeting was attended by his Egyptian counterparts, Sameh Shukri, Turkish Hakan Fidan, Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Hussein Ibrahim Taha, Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Minister of Civil Affairs, Hussein Al-Sheikh, and Minister of State in the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi.

In his meeting with Borrell, the efforts made to implement the two-state solution, recognition of the independent Palestinian state, and developments in the situation in Gaza were discussed.

Al-Safadi held extensive discussions with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, “within the framework of the ongoing consultation and coordination process regarding developments in the situation in Gaza, and the efforts aimed at stopping the raging war on the Strip, ensuring the protection of civilians, and delivering adequate and sustainable aid to all parts of the Strip.”

The two ministers stressed that “the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the two-state solution, is the only way to protect the region from the escalation of the conflict, and to ensure security and peace for the Palestinians, Israel, and the entire region.”

The open meeting within the work of the World Economic Forum, under the title “What Kind of Growth Do We Need,” began on Sunday in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and will continue on Monday.
