Airplanes in the skies of the Baltics encounter jamming of the positioning system – MFA

“The situation in the Baltic region near the Russian border is becoming too turbulent to ignore,” said Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis.

“If someone turns off your headlights at night while you’re driving, it would be dangerous,” Landsbergis said.

“We perceive what is happening with GPS as part of Russia’s hostile actions, and we will definitely discuss this with our allies,” said Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna. He said he believes these are “hybrid attacks.”

The Financial Times, citing a source, said that Russia is jamming GPS signals to prevent drone attacks on Kaliningrad.

In March 2024, an RAF plane carrying British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps and a group of journalists lost signal while returning from Poland and flying near Kaliningrad.

In April 2024, The Sun newspaper reported that thousands of British flights had been jammed with GPS systems. It is assumed that Russia did this. Ryanair reported interference in the airspace of the Baltic region countries on more than 2,300 of its flights, Wizz Air on almost 1,400, British Airways on 82, and EasyJet on four.

On April 25 and 26, two Finnair aircraft flying from Helsinki to the Estonian city of Tartu were forced to return to their departure airport due to GPS interference.

Finnair announced today that it will cease flights to Tartu for at least a month for safety reasons.

The Finnish carrier said there would be no flights to the Estonian city until at least May 31 “to introduce an alternative approach solution at Tartu Airport that does not require a GPS signal.”
