Oil union of Argentina begins strike against labor reform included in Bases Law

Workers at Argentina’s soybean processing plants went on strike at times when farmers harvest the harvest.

The strike, which began on Monday, threatens to paralyze production in Argentina, the world’s largest supplier of soy flour for feed and soybean oil for food and biofuels.

The strike is in protest once morest proposed changes to income taxes and labor standards included in the reforms proposed by President Javier Milei, which are being debated in Congress. The strike adds to the problems of milling companies such as Cargill Inc. and Glencore’s Viterra Inc., whose shipments of soybeans in the Paraná River have been affected by heavy rains that delayed the harvest.

The Union of Oil Workers and Employees (SOEA), which brings together plant workers in the port district of San Lorenzo de Paraná andrepresents around 70% of Argentine soybean shipments, went on strike early Monday morning, reported union leader Martín Morales. The Federation of Oilseed Industry Workers, whose members grind soybeans in other districts along the Paraná and the Atlantic coast, joined the strike, said spokesman Ernesto Torres.

“The labor reform contained in the Omnibus Law has nothing to do with modernization; “It is a big setback,” the federation said in a statement.

Stopped soybean plants

Most of the soybean plants in Paraná, including Cargill, Cofco Corp., Louis Dreyfus Co., Viterra and Bunge Global SA, have closed their doors to truck deliveries, according to shipping and port agencies in Rosario.

A prolonged strike might stop shipments of Argentine soy flour and oil, a situation similar to what occurred in December 2021, when workers stopped their work and processing fell to its lowest level in two decades.
