The French Foreign Minister is in Lebanon to contain the escalation on the border with Israel

Lebanon – French Foreign Minister Stephane Ségornet will meet today, Sunday, in Beirut, with senior Lebanese officials, in an effort to defuse the escalation on the border between the Lebanese resistance and Israel, and avoid a wider war.

Sigourney arrived in Lebanon yesterday evening, Saturday, “to continue efforts” aimed at “avoiding war” in a context that “has witnessed sharply increased tensions since the Iranian attack on Israel,” according to what a diplomatic source told AFP.

The source revealed that the mutual bombing between Israel and the Lebanese resistance “doubled” since April 13 and 14.

The French Foreign Minister will begin his tour with a visit to the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). He is expected to hold a press conference in the followingnoon following his meeting with Lebanese officials.

This is Sigourney’s second visit to Lebanon since his appointment to his position in January, and it comes as part of a tour in the Middle East that includes a stop in Riyadh to attend meetings on the situation in Gaza.

Last March, the Lebanese government submitted to Paris its response to the French initiative, which, according to another diplomatic source, is based on the implementation of United Nations Resolution 1701, which stipulates the deployment of members of the Lebanese army and UNIFIL forces alone only in southern Lebanon.

For its part, Washington is also active in containing the escalation on the Lebanese-Israeli border, and its envoy, Amos Hochstein, is visiting Jerusalem.

Over the weeks, hostilities escalated between Israel, which began bombing Lebanese territory in greater depth, and the Lebanese resistance, which began launching more sophisticated attacks on Israeli military sites in northern Israel.
