How DeployAI wants to be the one-stop shop for AI in Europe

From individuals to businesses looking to benefit from the advantages of this technology, artificial intelligence is on everyone’s lips. But to launch a project, you still need to be able to access resources and services around AI. DeployAI, a consortium of 28 European partners from 13 countries – including the France IA Hub and LightOn in France – intends to democratize access to AI technologies, including generative AI models and tools. The objective: to offer a one-stop shop in Europe. A project officially launched at the beginning of March from Germany, and for which the European Commission has released a global budget of 28 million euros.

From training to technological bricks

The consortium participants are divided into 11 research groups on different parts of the platform. They promise a tool that is independent of suppliers and guarantees fair access to technologies. On the one hand, DeployAI will offer “access to a wide variety of AI resources to train independently on the subject and on compliance with the AI Act”, explains Pierre Monget, program director at the France IA Hub, an association created to boost the AI ecosystem. On these subjects, the platform’s customers are companies that will adopt AI solutions, whether they are SMEs or large groups.

On the other hand, AI service and solution providers will be referenced in a map. To do this, they will have to apply and be selected by a committee of experts. “The idea behind this mapping is to highlight solutions that users can trust”, explains Pierre Monget. Datasets, large language models, AI bricks, pre-trained models, etc. will be directly accessible on a marketplace where the contact details of the solution provider will appear. The interest is twofold: the listed companies, including start-ups, access the European market with a certain credibility and users can quickly scan the different offers available to them.

How to audit solutions and companies remains a huge question. One thing is certain: several audits will have to be carried out during the lifespan of a technological brick. The consortium is considering what criteria will be attached to the companies offering their services: trusted AI, frugal AI, customer rating, etc. Criteria which will be added to the filters concerning the sectors targeted by the tools and their functionalities.

A business model to find

The platform must be operational before the end of the program and gradually improved. A first version is planned for the end of the year. “We need to deliver the product to get user feedback and improve the versions to be close to needs,” explains Pierre Monget.

By the end of 2027, the goal is to have a viable business model. “A reflection is being carried out on the operational entity which will ultimately manage the platformadds Pierre Monget. It will be necessary to both update the platform and take care of the relationship with users by finding a profitable business model so as not to be dependent on European funding.” Operation and maintenance costs to continue to evolve the service must particularly be taken into account. The team still has four years to find.
