“Three moves for the new EU” –
Pietro De Leo

Today the programmatic conference of Fratelli d’Italia in Pescara ends, and the political cusp of the initiative is the moment in which Giorgia Meloni – barring sensational surprises – should announce her candidacy. The Prime Minister arrived in the Abruzzo city yesterday evening and today, before the final speech, there will also be space for the coalition. Speakers will include the secretary of Forza Italia Antonio Tajani, the founder of Noi Moderati Maurizio Lupi and the number one of the UDC Lorenzo Cesa. The leader of the League Matteo Salvini, however, will not be present but, as announced yesterday, will participate via video link. Therefore, at the end of the three days, Giorgia Meloni should formalize her run for the European elections, apparently as the leader in all the constituencies. Also providing a general programmatic architecture of what will be the priorities to be claimed in the community context. Among these, the implementation of the European dimension of the Mattei Plan to combat illegal immigration and start a path of cooperation with African countries. A work that has taken shape in recent months with a side game together with the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The approach to a policy based on partnerships has begun to show results, just think of the decline in arrivals from Tunisia. Another theme will be the environmental one, promoting a discontinuity with respect to a green deal which for the first part of the legislature now coming to an end, due to the influence of the socialists, was completely antithetical to the need to reconcile environmental regulations and economic viability for businesses. And once more the theme of birth rate, another qualifying point of the Fratelli d’Italia proposal. These, therefore, are three points among those that the Prime Minister should address today.

Meanwhile, yesterday the second day saw a wide-ranging overview of all the topics that dot the political agenda. Including artificial intelligence, in a panel coordinated by the director of Tempo Tommaso Cerno. Relevance, then, to the economy and the tax issue. The deputy economy minister Maurizio Leo who insisted on the concept of “tax dialogue”. Explaining that, through the fiscal truce, “we have recovered 6.8 billion euros”. And he explained: «When we arrived at the government, 28 million euros in payment bills were regarding to go out. We said that taxes must be paid and we did not give discounts, despite what our opponents say. But we have lowered the sanctions. And people paid.” A panel was then dedicated to justice, with minister Carlo Nordio reiterating the government’s reform objectives. The first “package” (which contains, among other things, the elimination of abuse of office and the reform of wiretapping) will be approved by May. However, regarding the separation of careers and CSM «it will take more time because they are constitutional but we will get there by the end of the legislature». In the meantime, the completion of the lists is taking place on the sidelines (the match will be closed by May 1st). Ecr co-president Nicola Procaccini and Carlo Fidanza, both outgoing, have been confirmed, as has Pietro Fiocchi, an industrialist in the ammunition field. Given for certain, then, is the debut of the Venetian councilor Elena Donazzan. And Fabrizio Tatarella, nephew of the historic right-wing exponent Pinuccio, whose political memory he is committed to reclaiming through cultural dissemination, might also be deployed. Today Meloni should dissolve the reserve.
