In Africa, only 2% of the data collected is stored on the continent. In recent years, African initiatives and start-ups have developed with the aim of reversing the trend. During the 4th edition of the Africa Cyber Forum held in mid-April in Abidjan, the discussions focused in particular on data management in health and the challenges related to securing personal information.
From our correspondent in Abidjan,
On a daily basis, new information and communication technology is essential. Our connected devices, such as computers and smartphones, produce large amounts of data. Once collected and processed, this helps authorities and businesses make effective decisions.
But at the moment, Africa has very little local infrastructure. storage of your data. However, this is a question of its sovereignty, believes Alain Yao Kouadio, CEO of Kaydan Group, a company that invests in data management.
« You cannot have your data regarding the health of your population, regarding the consumption behavior of your population and so on, stored externally, he warns. You have no sovereignty over this, this data can be cut off from you at any time. So the outside world will make decisions with greater acuity than yourself because you don’t have your data on-site, you don’t know how to process it on-site. »
Anticipate possible attacks
In the health sector, these challenges are all the greater, given the sensitivity of certain information, especially in the medical field. ” In developed countries, there is still hacking. Today, given that we are not yet as exposed, we must prepare. We must learn from others, learn from French hospitals that have been attacked, whose systems have been blocked », Estimate Éric Djibo, managing director of the PISAM polyclinic in Abidjan. ” We really need to protect this data “, he insists.
Among the topics raised during the 4th edition of the Cyber Africa Forum, the issue of data management was at the heart of the discussions. The aim is to make the authorities aware of the need to invest in this area. ” This is precisely the place for us, through this initiative, to accelerate », explains Franck Kié. It relies on public and private decision-makers” to have really special attention to data handling, to securing data and also to its utilization. “For professionals you have to anticipate” before we face a disaster, pay even more attention to it ».
The number of cyber attacks has more than doubled over the past five years, while the cost of cybercrime is also increasing, with estimates rising to $10.5 trillion by 2025.
