Musk travels to China to hunt for data to improve Tesla’s autonomous driving

Unexpected trip to China by Elon Musk. The owner of Tesla arrived in Beijing for a visit at the invitation of the Chinese Council for the Promotion of International Trade, as announced by public television CCTV. The news of the visit of the entrepreneur owner of Tesla, SpaceX and the social network X had not been anticipated in recent days. Musk, whose previous visit to China was in June 2023, met with the head of China’s Council for the Promotion of International Trade Ren Hongbin to discuss the next steps of a collaboration, according to Chinese media reports, and held talks with a senior trade official also in Beijing. “It’s good to see electric vehicles making progress in China,” he said. “All cars will be electric in the future.”

One of the purposes of the trip, as suggested by the analyst of the Californian asset management, brokerage and consultancy firm Wedbush Securities, Dan Ives, is to make arrangements so that Tesla can transfer the navigation data collected from its cars in China to the United States, for the purpose to improve software performance Full Self-Driving (Fsd) for autonomous driving. «If Musk managed to obtain Beijing’s approval – comments Ives – to transfer the data collected in China abroad, this would represent a “turning point” regarding the acceleration of the training of algorithms for autonomous driving» .

Tesla has so far sold 1.7 million cars in China. The visit of the entrepreneur of South African origin to the Chinese capital coincides with the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, the Beijing Auto Show which is currently being held and will close on May 4th. The entrepreneur of South African origin also met the Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang during his stay.
