Cargo turnover at the Freeport of Riga continues to fall

In the first quarter of 2024, 3.712 million tons of cargo were sent from the port of Riga, which is 14.3% more than in the same period last year, and the volume of cargo received decreased by half, amounting to 996,300 tons.

Most of all, bulk cargo was handled at the port in the first three months of 2024 – 2.472 million tons, which is 22.4% less than in the same period last year. At the same time, general cargo was handled in the amount of 2.027 million tons, which is more by 11.4%, liquid cargo – in the amount of 209,300 tons, which is less by 24.5%.

Container cargo in the first three months of this year in the port of Riga was transshipped in the amount of 1.315 million tons, which is 15.9% more than in the first three months of 2023, and constitutes 27.9% of the total volume of cargo transshipped in the port (a year earlier – 21.5%).

Grain and grain products in the first quarter of this year were transshipped in the amount of 872,900 tons, which is an increase of 41.2% compared to the same period last year and constitutes 18.5% of the total volume of cargo transshipped at the port.

In the first three months of this year, 661,200 tons of timber were handled at the port of Riga, which is 12.4% more than in the same period a year earlier, and wood chips were handled in the amount of 423,900 tons, which is 67.2% more.

In the first three months of this year, 4,400 tons of coal were transshipped in the port of Riga, while 879,600 tons of coal were transshipped in the corresponding period a year earlier.

A total of 18.794 million tons of cargo were handled at the Freeport of Riga in 2023, which is 20.1% less than in 2022, including 5.281 million tons of cargo handled at the port in the first three months of last year.

In terms of the volume of cargo handled, the port of Riga is the largest port in Latvia.
