THE OFFICE of Customs Supervision and Excise Services (KPPBC) Teluk Bayur, Padang City, West Sumatra, noted that palm oil (CPO) and its fractions dominate export commodities from West Sumatra in the first quarter of 2024.
“Approximately 75% to 80% of the total commodities exported per month are CPO. This is followed by exports of natural rubber, cement, other vegetable products and animal products such as live fish,” said Head of KPPBC Teluk Bayur Indra Sucahyo, Sunday (28/4 ).
He said that the products of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in other vegetable products and animal products were around 1% -4% of the total export value of export commodities. “SME scale commodities monitored include resin, coffee products, fishery products, oil extracts, nutmeg, and so on,” he said.
The potential for commodity exports in West Sumatra abroad is quite high. The most export destinations are South Asia (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh), more than 50% of export volume or tonnage.
“Actually, many West Sumatra commodities are exported abroad, either via air or sea ports, but are sent via other regional ports such as Medan and Tanjung Priok, Jakarta,” he said.
This, he explained, is because the air and sea ports in West Sumatra have several limitations, so they cannot export directly from West Sumatra to various countries. “Like international direct flights, they only exist for flights to Malaysia and Saudi Arabia,” he said.
This means that West Sumatra exporters are forced to send their commodities via air and sea ports in other areas. Therefore, it is as if the commodity originates from the delivery area. Even though these commodities come from West Sumatra. This has an impact on economic statistical records, on the quantity of export commodities originating from West Sumatra.
“We recommend that exporters from West Sumatra include a Certificate of Origin (SKA) for commodities they will send abroad via other regions,” he suggested. He explained that including the correct origin of export commodities would help increase the West Sumatra APBD indirectly. (Z-2)
