Morocco – French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire announced that France is ready to participate in financing a three-gigawatt electricity line linking the Moroccan city of Casablanca to the town of Dakhla in the Sahara region.
“I assure you that we are ready to participate in financing this project,” Le Maire said during a Moroccan-French business forum in Rabat on Friday.
Le Maire added that France also intends to cooperate with Morocco in developing solar energy, wind energy and green hydrogen projects, in addition to nuclear energy.
He pointed out that the French Development Agency will provide a loan worth 350 million euros to help the OCP group in its green transformation plan.
Last February, French Foreign Minister Stephane Ségornet said that Paris supports Morocco’s investments in the Sahara, and reiterated its support for Rabat’s plan to grant the region autonomy, which indicates a rapprochement in relations between the two countries following a period of diplomatic stagnation.
Morocco wants France to recognize its full sovereignty over the Sahara region, over which the dispute has been going on for decades between Morocco and the “Polisario” Front, which declared an independent republic in the region.
France is considered the largest foreign investor in Morocco, with total investments of 8.2 billion euros until 2022.
