Madrid. The general counsel of TikTok and ByteDance – its Chinese parent company – in the United States, Erich Andersen, left his position following the US Senate approved a law on Tuesday that will allow a national ban on the platform if ByteDance does not disassociate itself from it. Bloomberg reported.

“It has been a difficult decision to resign following so many years in this position. “I am grateful to my talented global legal team, who has successfully faced each new challenge with incredible courage and maturity,” he said following the decision was announced.

Andersen will remain with the company as a “special advisor” following leaving his current position in June and his work will focus on the effort to overturn this legislation in the US and “other urgent legal matters,” said a TikTok statement cited by the same media.

The company had been preparing the dismissal of Andersen as general counsel following the advance in the US Congress of the aforementioned law, presented with the purpose of forcing the “divestment or ban” of TikTok. However, the company itself denied a week ago that it was planning to dismiss Andersen.

“His decision to leave the position of general counsel has been entirely his own,” added the social network’s spokesperson, Jodi Seth, in this regard.

The until now general counsel had been in the spotlight for a week and his departure from office was being considered as it was considered that he had failed in his task of convincing the United States government that the company was “doing enough” to avoid any concern in terms of national security regarding the company’s connections with China.
