Amman – Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi confirmed on Saturday that if canceling the peace agreement signed with Israel in 1994 would serve Palestine, the Kingdom would not have hesitated to cancel it.
The Jordanian minister spoke during a dialogue session in the capital, Amman, according to the official “Kingdom” TV.
On October 26, 1994, Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty under American sponsorship, but relations between the two sides went through several crises following the repeated Israeli escalation in the Palestinian territories in general and the city of Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque in particular.
Al-Safadi said: “Jordan signed the peace agreement in a collective Arab context, in order to achieve a just and comprehensive peace.”
He added, “Jordan signed the agreement following our brothers in the Palestinian National Authority signed the Oslo Accords (1993).”
He continued: “Since that time, Jordan has been using this agreement to serve the brotherly Palestinian people, and to protect our interests as well.”
Al-Safadi referred to “hearing many demands to cancel the peace agreement,” asking: “Who benefits?” What will it serve?
He explained, “The peace agreement returned occupied land to us, defined our borders, and provided a special role for the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in managing the Islamic and Christian holy sites. Were it not for this role, Israel would have infiltrated this vacuum in order to impose its sovereignty and management over the holy sites.”
He stressed, “If we thought for a moment that canceling the peace agreement would contribute to serving the Palestinian people, protect Jordan, or help it carry out its role, we would not hesitate.”
In early November, Amman decided to withdraw its ambassador from Tel Aviv, and refused to return the Israeli ambassador to the Kingdom, as a result of the Israeli escalation in the Gaza Strip, and in response to the street’s demand, following continuous mass demonstrations.
Then, on the 16th of the same month, it decided to stop signing an agreement between the two countries to exchange water for energy, following targeting the vicinity of the Jordanian field hospital in the Palestinian sector and wounding 7 of its staff.
