The “red and white” prevailed in the closed game of Ilioupoli 39-32 in Ferentsvaros, in the rematch of the semi-final phase, and passed solemnly and undefeated in the final, following having drawn 28-28 in Budapest. Olympiacos/Omilos Xyni becomes the fourth Greek handball team to qualify for a European final, following Filippos Verias, Diomedis Argos and AEK (twice).
The hosts took control of the match following a balanced first quarter and led 14-10 in the 18th minute and 21-18 at halftime, with the trio of Sliskovic, Cavcic, Savva scoring “in bursts”. Ferentsvaros stayed close to the score until the 35th minute (23-21), when a 3-0 run by Olympiacos finally tipped the scales. The “red and white” reached +7 (31-24) and, although the Magyars made a desperate effort (33-29 ten minutes before the end), the triumph was never in doubt.
Olympiakos’ opponent in the final will be announced tomorrow (28/4) when the rematch between Minaur Baia Mare and Valur Reykjavik takes place in Romania, with the Icelandic side maintaining a significant lead thanks to their 36-28 victory in first game.
