SYDNEY.— Horrified parishioners watched online and in person when a 15-year-old teenager stabbed a bishop and a priest at the altar during a church service in Sydney yesterday followingnoon before being subdued by worshipers, police said.

In an attempt to take justice into your own handsHundreds of people gathered in front of the assyrian orthodox church, bricks and bottles were thrown and injured police officers to prevent them from taking the teenager from the scene, according to authorities. The attack did not leave any serious injuries.

In a message on social media, the church noted that the bishop and priest were in stable condition in a hospital and asked its faithful to pray.

“It is the wish of the bishop and the father that you also pray for the perpetrator,” the church statement said.

A video posted on social media shows a young man dressed in black approach the bishop and stab him repeatedly in the head and the upper part of the body.

Members of the congregation are seen shouting and running to stop him.

Holland praised the congregation for subduing the minor before calling police.

When asked if the minor’s fingers had been cut off, he said the injuries to his hands were “serious.”

More than 100 police officers arrived before the minor was taken out of the church in the event that lasted an hour.

Several police vehicles were damaged, Holland said. Several houses were damaged. They broke into several homes to obtain objects to throw at the police.

“They threw weapons and objects at the church itself. Obviously there were people who wanted access to the minor who caused the injuries to the clergy,” she said.
