“March 11 is a symbol of resistance, democracy and the rebirth of statehood. Expressing the will of the nation, the Supreme Council declared that Lithuania is independent, and the constitution of no other state is valid on the territory of our state. By gathering together and celebrating this event together every year, we remember how strong a united nation is and how important it is to celebrate and protect freedom”, Vice Mayor Andrius Palionis said while inviting to the March 11 events.
On the morning of March 11, at 10 a.m., Kaunas residents are invited to vote for Kaunas St. in the Basilica of the Apostles Peter and Paul and St. in the church of the Archangel Michael (Egula). After St. After the mass, a festive procession will move from the old town towards the garden of the Vytautas Great War Museum. 11:30 a.m. the carillon bells will welcome those present. Carillon singer Roberta Daugelaitė will give a musical performance.
From noon, there will be speeches of welcome, the National Anthem, the pledge of the young shooters and the oath of the shooters. The flag of the Order of the Cross of Vytis will be raised, flowers will be laid. The ceremony started in 1921 honors the fighters who died for the freedom and independence of Lithuania.
After the solemn commemoration, a festive concert will await those gathered. The program includes Evelina Sašenko and Liudas Mikalauskas, Gabija Lokytė, Kotryna Juodzevičiūtė, the mixed choir of the Kaunas Culture Center “Kamertonas” and the folk dance group “Suktinis”.
On March 11, Kaunas public transport will take you to the festive events for free.
Events of cultural institutions
The first events dedicated to Lithuania’s Independence Day will begin on March 7. The presentation of the book “Drama of Independence Struggles” by publicist Jonas Arbačiauskas is planned at the Park branch of Kaunas Vincas Kudirkas Public Library (P. Lukšios str. 58). March 8 the concert “We achieve freedom through struggle” by the ensemble “Smaragdas” of Eiguliai-Žaliakalnis Community Center will be held here.
The Kaunas Culture Center (Vytautos Ave. 79) will also invite you to its premises. On Monday, Independence Day, mixed choirs will perform at the choral music concert “Skambėk, Lietuva!”.
March 11 at 2 p.m. In the Great Hall of Vytautas the Great University (S. Daukant st. 28), the folk dance collective “Žilvitis” together with the performers will present the concert program “Steps of Freedom”, and the students of the VDU Music Academy will perform at the event “Let’s Hear Lithuania” at the Kaunas City Museum M. and K. Petrauskės at home.
March 12 At 19:00, at Vincas Kudirkas Public Library in Kaunas (Laisvės al. 57), the movie “Oars through the Atlantic” will invite you to find determination and inspiration.
Free museum visits
On March 11, Kaunas City Museum departments will invite you to visit for free. Kaunians from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. will be able to view the expositions of M. and K. Petrauskas, National Music and Castle Departments, J. Gruodis House.
The Vytautas Great War Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Together with the guides, visitors will be able to explore the Military Equipment Exhibition (Fort VI, K. Baršausko St. 101), visit the underground printing press “ab” that operated during the Soviet era and has never been discovered (Spaustuvės St. 2, Domeikava).
