The Braves saw a light of hope in the pitching of Wendolyn Bautista and stopped the momentum of one of the teams considered powerful in the South Zone.
Bautista pitched five innings in an impassable manner and the Braves, sullied on opening night, took advantage of a weak first inning by Odrisamer Despaigne to head toward an 8-1 victory last night at the “Domingo Santana” Park in León, matching the first series of the 2024 season of the Mexican League.
Despaigne allowed two runs in the good night act, in part because of his lack of control. And Baustista showed off as much as the long-haired César Valdez did the night before. The Braves relievers were also seen with good marks.
Uncovered the previous night with a 19-hit attack, the Lions were held to five this time. The only run they scored was on a grounder by José Peraza, which sent Japanese Tomo Otosaka to the rubber. Between five Guanajuato streamers they distributed ten chocolates, three of them on Art Charles’ account.
The key for the Braves to silence the Lions’ offense was to dominate the core of the batting order: between second and fifth (Yadir Drake, Peraza, Charles and “Pepón” Juárez) they went 0 for 15.
The third of the series will be played today at 6 pm and Panamanian Randall Delgado will take the mound for the Lions. Fernando Lozano will pitch for the Braves.
The Gregorius boot
Didi Gregorius hit a two-run homer to complete a four-run rally in the sixth inning and the Algodoneros del Unión Laguna beat the Dorados de Chihuahua 7-1 at the Revolución Stadium to secure their first series of the regular season.—Gaspar Silveira
