HUNOR astronaut program
Written by Mirtill Radonyi
These days the Hungarian astronaut candidates took part in a ten-day US trip to Houston and Philadelphia.
In the strongholds of space travel, they gained professional insights into the daily work of institutions and experts. At face-to-face meetings, Hungarians heard stories from astronauts who had already been to space. At NASA headquarters in Houston, they visited the mockup facility, a lifelike replica of the International Space Station where professional astronauts are trained. They learned regarding the tools used in training astronauts, modern spaceflight models, and the history of U.S. space activities.
The comprehensive theoretical and practical training was carried out by specialists from Axiom Space. Various aptitude tests and training tasks had to be completed. Space experts and company psychologists constantly checked reactions and communication skills. In addition, thanks to virtual reality, candidates were able to experience the ins and outs of working in space and follow live experiments on the International Space Station.
The Hungarians also successfully completed centrifuge training at the International Space Station Training and Research Center in Philadelphia. During the 45-minute training session, the candidates had to withstand a load of 6G. The entire process from start to return was simulated. The candidates’ space doctor continuously monitored their health status and physiological parameters via audio and video link.
