Cleaning day on the beaches of Tijuana

Environmentalists carry out cleaning days on the beaches of Tijuana, considered the most polluted in the country, on the border of Mexico with the United States, to combat binational water pollution on the main border between both nations.

The organization Save the Beach organizes citizen cleanups in Mexicali, Tecate, Ensenada and Tijuana, in Baja California, where hundreds of people join in to collect plastic objects, cans, cardboard, cigarette butts and bottles.

Nereida Ayala, coordinator of Save the Beach, shared with EFE that with this activity they also aim to raise awareness among citizens regarding the care of waterways and beaches, which have long suffered from pollution, which has generated a binational problem between Mexico. and the United States.

“I think this is an activity that, at the moment of action, helps us raise awareness, since you are there and you can appreciate the problem,” he said.

According to a report provided to EFE by the Federal Commission for Protection once morest Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), Baja California and Guerrero are the most polluted beaches in Mexico and are not suitable for recreational use because they represent risks to the population.

More than 400 volunteers from various organizations and companies, such as Greenpeace Mexico, joined this weekend’s cleaning days.

Nereida Ayala pointed out that “the authorities should put more effort with timely notices, which are visible to people and generate protocols so that there are more authorities who are monitoring.”

“These are the only spaces we have open and it seems a little unfair to me that, for things beyond our control, because we pay taxes and the infrastructure is not working, the beaches are contaminated and we cannot visit them,” he lamented.

The most contaminated

The Cofepris report indicates that “the Clean Beaches Committee warned that the Government of Mexico carried out monitoring in February consisting of 2,238 samples in 289 beaches in the country, in which those of Tijuana, Rosarito Beaches, as well as of Tlacopanocha and Carabalí in Acapulco.”

They surpass levels

“For the second consecutive year, Playas de Tijuana and Rosarito exceeded the acceptable levels of enterococci in sea waters. Baja California occupies first place in Playa Blanca de Tijuana contamination with 15,531 enterococci, followed by Baja Malibú, with 6,132, and San Antonio del Mar, with 3,076,” the text states.
