Josep Borrell stressed the need for de-escalation in his speech on Iran’s attacks on Israel at the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg.
He spoke of an unprecedented attack as well as a major escalation in an already very tense situation in the region. At the same time, he referred to “dangerous games with attacks and retaliation”.
According to the protothema, the Joseph Borel stated that both the “27” leaders of the EU member states and Commission on its part they sent a strong message appealing for peace. In addition, he pointed out that there was a political decision in the council of foreign ministers in Luxembourg to extend the sanctions once morest Iran. However, he added, “sanctions are a tool, but they are not a policy by themselves. It is a political tool.”
“Sanctions cannot provide a solution to the risk of escalation” he underlined, adding that space must be given to diplomacy. The High Representative stressed that it is “time for diplomacy” and the EU is keeping channels open with all sides. “We have coordinated our efforts to reach out to Israel to show restraint,” he said, and concluded by underlining that Gaza is “at the center and will remain as long as the war continues” and “we must not forget what is happening” there.
