The Kremlin has threatened to further expand its “security zone” inside Ukraine if kyiv receives longer-range missiles from the United States that allow it to strike deeper inside Russia.
The United States is preparing a $1 billion military aid package for Ukraine, the first to come from the yet-to-be-signed Ukraine-Israel bill, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Tuesday.
Asked regarding the possibility of the package including longer-range ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) missiles, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia’s position on the matter – which will be forced to expand what it calls a security zone in Ukraine if longer-range missiles are delivered – had not changed.
The threat reveals the Kremlin’s intention to annex more territories currently controlled by kyiv following a new offensive expected in the summer.
