Its construction is progressing dynamically new Thermal Power Station combined cycle (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine-CCGT) power 840 MW the company’s Electricity production of Alexandroupoli S.A.one collusion of energy partners PPC Group (51%), DEPA Emporias (29%) and Damco Energy of Kopelouzo Group (20%). This is an investment of €400 million in VI.PE. Alexandroupolis which is expected to be completed in approximately 24 months.
After its release building permit of the project, the Civil Engineering works started immediately, while the construction of the main equipment of the plant (gas turbine, steam turbine, boiler and generator) it’s already happening in the factories of General Electric (GE). As for the gas turbine, its assembly has been completed and the “Full Speed No Load (FSNL)” test has been successfully carried out. This is the first operation test of the natural gas-fired gas turbine, at its assembly plant.
Ongoing there is also the arrangement of accompanying projects such as transmission lines of the energy that will be produced at the station, the necessary ones substations 400 kV and the connection for natural gas supply at the station.
The station it will supply energy to the domestic market as well as neighboring countries. The interconnection of the unit with the National Electricity Transmission System will be made with direct lines to the High Voltage Center (HVT) of Nea Santa, the termination point – among others – of the new 400 kV line to Bulgaria. Thus, the station will play a pivotal role in export of electricity to Southeast Europe and specifically to Bulgaria and North Macedonia and, by extension, to Serbia.
The new station – efficient operation, lower CO2 emissions
The new unit, combined cycle fueled by natural gas, is being built on a privately owned plot of land of 181 acres with an installed capacity of 840MW and annual output 5TWH. Natural gas will be used as fuel, however the new production station will have the ability to hydrogen combustion but also mixed operation, which makes it compatible and fully supportive of the national and European planning for the gradual transition to green energy.
The thermal power station is of “Single Shaft” configuration and has been designed with highest efficiency rating 63% for units of such technology, which implies a high rate of exploitation. The high degree of efficiency will enable the new Unit – in addition to lower fuel consumption – to have and lower carbon dioxide emissions.
One will be placed in the “heart” of the new station gas turbine 571 MW General Electric, fueled by natural gas, and one steam turbine, with a power of 269 MW, three pressure levels, with direct connection to the generator. THE generator type W88 of General Electric, nominal power 948 MVA, will be synchronous, three-phase, connected to a common shaft.
Accompanying projects – connection to natural gas pipelines and high voltage lines
The power plant will be connected through the National Natural Gas System (ESFA) and to the Floating Natural Gas Storage and Gasification Unit (FSRU) at Alexandroupolis, of the GASTRADE company, thus turning Alexandroupolis into an energy crossroads of electricity and natural gas networks.
The natural gas supply pipeline to the new unit will be underground and will start from the area of Anthia Evros, where it will be connected to the ESFA pipeline. The pipeline will end at the Alexandroupoli Environmental Protection Agency, near the new Station, at the Metering and Regulation Station (M/R Station) of DESFA. The project is foreseen in the 2023-2032 Development Program of DESFA.
The CCGT station of the Alexandroupoli Power Plant will be connected to the electricity grid with 400 kV high voltage transmission lines. The accompanying project includes the construction and operation of two 400 KV single circuit Transmission Lines. Each line will be approximately 28 km long.
At the same time, a new one is being planned and will be built near the new power plant 400kV Ultra High Voltage Center closed type (KYT EVROU I) and will take place expansion projects at the KYT 400kV in Nea Santa Rodopis.
