By now, no one doubts that something extraordinary will be needed if Frederikshavn Port – and thus the new owners of the municipality’s town hall – are to get rid of the billion-dollar debt that the port has accumulated in just a few years.
Now the North Jutland parliamentary veteran Bjarne Laustsen (S) is launching a proposal that can create new revenue, more jobs and greater earnings at the port in Frederikshavn.
He does so on the basis of a new report from the think tank Kraka, which was presented on Thursday at the annual meeting of the industry organization Danske Maritime. The report states that as far as the eye can see there is a need to build new ships for e.g. the Danish Navy.
– Frederikshavn Harbor is a fantastic asset for the municipality, has always been and will be in the future. The best way to help the port is to give them some tasks that they can earn money on and get the debt paid off, writes Bjarne Laustsen in a post he has sent to Nordjyske.
In an article on the online media maritimedanmark.dk, it is estimated that 59 ships will be built for the Norwegian Navy by 2055.

– This is where Frederikshavn and North Jutland come into the picture. I am sure that our shipyards will know their visiting hours, says Bjarne Laustsen.
For years, he has fought for Denmark to actively make use of Article 346 of the Treaty of Rome. It states that EU member states do not need to send defense equipment to EU tenders, but can be content with sending it to tenders in Denmark.
– It is wise, because then we can also service our fleet ourselves when we have built it ourselves, and the Danish wage earners get a little in return in relation to the extra money that will be spent on the Defense in the coming years, says Bjarne Laustsen.
He himself attended the annual meeting at Danske Maritime, where during the presentation of the report from Kraka it was estimated that society can get up to 60 per cent. return of that investment in new ships if they are built in Denmark.
– And with the expertise we have here in Denmark, we can also export new warships to other countries. After all, all countries are now arming themselves to face the aggression from e.g. Russia, points out Bjarne Laustsen.
The report from Kraka estimates that there are up to 4,500 new jobs hidden in the construction of newbuildings for ships for the navy and ferries for domestic routes here at home.
