More than 227,000 Mexicans will be able to vote in 23 centers in the US, Canada, Madrid and Paris

MEXICO CITY.- This Monday, during the usual morning press conference of the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obradorthe secretary of External relationships, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra.

In her speech, the Mexican Foreign Minister reported that 227,112 Mexicans living abroad will be able to vote in the June 2 elections in 23 centers installed in the United States, Montreal, Canada, Madrid, Spain, and Paris, France.

The 20 headquarters in the United States are distributed in the cities of Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Fresno, Houston, Los Angeles, New Brunswick, New York, Oklahoma, Orlando, Phoenix, Raleigh, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Ana, Seattle and Washington.

Other people who have completed their registration will be able to vote by mail or online, as detailed by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

Although the number of voters from abroad is almost 25% more than the 181,873 voters in the 2018 presidential elections, Bárcena acknowledged that “it is still a low number for the number of Mexicans abroad.”

“Those who have the right to vote are very few,” commented President López Obrador, who attributed this phenomenon to “bureaucratism” and “obstacles.”

INE declares more than 39 thousand records inadmissible

The information is released following the controversy that broke out on April 13, when the National Electoral Institute (INE) declared “the inadmissibility” of 39,724 registrations of Mexicans abroad.

The event aroused criticism from the presidential candidates, Claudia Sheinbaum and Xóchitl Gálvez, who accused the INE of preventing the participation of voters, particularly those who had asked to vote online.

The autonomous body clarified on Sunday that 20,964 cases that presented inconsistency will now be able to vote, while there are still 18,760 with irregularities who will still be able to vote in the special ballot boxes of the consulates, although not by internet or mail.

Electoral process, responsibility of the INE

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs argued that “this is fundamentally a responsibility of the INE.”

“On voting day, which is Sunday, June 2, the consulates are at the disposal of the INE and all the consulate staff, including the consul, leave the facilities because we do not participate, in any way, anywhere. of the process that is the total responsibility of the INE,” he assured.
