Sanchez, wife under investigation: the Madrid prosecutor’s office requests the dismissal of the case

The accusation once morest Gómez is that of having taken advantage of his relationship with Sanchez by recommending, even with his signature, entrepreneurs who intended to participate in public tenders. One of these, according to the complaint, obtained a 10 million contract and then organized a master’s degree directed by Gómez. Air Europa, of the Globalia group, would also have committed to paying 40 thousand euros a year to the Africa Center of the IE University Business School, led by Gómez, plus 15 thousand euros in plane tickets. Globalia allegedly contacted Gómez through Víctor de Aldama, a businessman involved in the Koldo case, an episode of political corruption that led to the suspension from the socialist party of José Luis Ábalos, former minister of Sanchez’s previous governments. De Aldama would have obtained a contract worth 6.7 million. The prosecutor’s office, however, maintains the strictest confidentiality regarding the investigations, while the Minister of Justice Félix Bolaños, as well as Sanchez himself, has defined the accusations as “false”.

The controversies

The controversy over Gómez has had an important echo on Spanish websites, which Sanchez has indicated as “clearly right-wing and far-right” for weeks. According to the prime minister, opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo, who leads the People’s Party, and Santiago Abascal, of the far-right Vox party, have been pursuing a strategy that has aimed for months to “torment and destroy” Sanchez.

Opposition to the attack

However, if in the progressive camp those define a “heroic gesture” the “personal and painful” choice of Pedro Sanchez to take a 5-day break to decide whether or not to remain at the helm of the government, and to induce a personal and collective reflection on the drift Trumpian politics into which Spanish politics has been dragged, on the opposite front, the leader of the People’s Party Feijoo himself does not agree and considers Sanchez’s move “the last move of an electoral and judicial strategy of the PSOE”, in view of the next elections in Catalonia on 12 May and the European elections on 9 June. With harsh words, Feijoo accused the prime minister of “putting up a teenager’s show so that they ask him not to leave”.

Sanchez, head of the executive since 2018, formed a new coalition government in November 2023, despite coming second, following the People’s Party, in the recent legislative elections.
