29-year-old smoked at a gas station in Upper Styria – suffered severe burns

The man had spilled petrol while refueling, soaking some of his clothing. According to current investigations, when the man sat down in his car following refueling, he may have lit a cigarette. His outer clothing caught fire, the Styria State Police Department said on Friday.

The man spilled a large amount of fuel at a gas pump at the gas station in Spital (Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district). The combination of gasoline fumes from his clothing and an open flame when lighting the cigarette in the vehicle may have set the outer clothing on fire. A 25-year-old and a 21-year-old immediately provided first aid. The seriously injured person was flown to Vienna General Hospital by rescue helicopter. He mightn’t be questioned yet.
